Welcome!
As of today, I have two children aged 4 months (X) and 2 years (U), and I, like most parents, read books to them in order to foster a love of books and reading. Children's books are a bit of a curiosity to me since I've become an adult. A thoughtfully crafted children's book will contain beautiful artwork, tell a compelling story, teach some lessons, have dimensional characters, all while adhering to the vocabulary limitations of the audience. They are often very funny. And they need to entertain the parents as well in order to be purchased and read in the first place.
So while I find books and read them, the questions I ask are "what lessons is the author(s) trying to convey to my kids?" "How does the story assist those lessons?" "Is this book good?" I'm going to use this blog to share some of the books I've read and explore some of these questions while I figure out what makes a really good children's book.
